English Summary:

The main attraction of Affenberg Salem is very special: More than 200 Barbary Macaques live freely within a forest area of 20 hectares. A footpath guides the visitors through the monkeys' home range where you meet the animals from eye to eye, without any physical barriers. Specially prepared popcorn is distributed free and can be fed to the monkeys. This concept not only provides a fascinating contact with our relatives, but also offers excellent conditions for observing, photographing and filming. Furthermore the park has proved to be an ideal field for behavioural studies and it also contributes to the conservation of the endangered Barbary Macaques. Entire groups have been reintroduced to their native homelands in North Africa.

Additional Attractions and General Information

In front of the monkey hill lies a large pond, populated with many Water Birds and big Carps. The path around this pond also leads through an extended enclosure housing a troop of pretty Fallow Deer.

Near to the entrace/exit area a free living colony of White Storks have settled. Every spring and summer they breed and raise their young here. In autumn they migrate to Africa for the winter season.

The Affenberg staff is prepared to provide information to the visitors, and furthermore at feeding times they give explanatory speeches.

Unique in Europe is the Affen-Galerie, a little museum, where images of monkeys from all over the world are exhibited.

Affenberg Salem of course also disposes of a Self-Service Restaurant, an interesting Information Room, a Play Ground for children, Rest Rooms, including one for wheelchair users.

Parking is free.

The Affenberg can also be reached by using the Erlebnisbus, which connects the Affenberg with the Salem Castle (Schloss Salem), Salem railway station, Uhldingen Mühlhofen railway station, and Pfahlbaumuseum Uhldingen.
